DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR (all levels): Assists with planning and coordinated administration of one or more large, centralized databases. Reviews database design and integration of host systems and makes recommendations for enhancements and improvements. Ensures accurate, appropriated and effective use of data, including database structure, documentation and operational guidelines. Performs audits to ensure accuracy and proper use of data in tables, applications and supporting dictionaries. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision and guidance. BS/BA degree (or equivalent) plus 0 to 2 years of experience in related field. Higher-level database administrators may require up to 10 years prior experience.
Additional requirements for higher-level Database Administrator positions may include:
- Matching user requirements with system capabilities
- Developing and formulating standards, procedures and conventions for database use
- Working with technical/programming staff to ensure database security
- Determining file organization, indexing methods and security procedures for specific user applications
- Greater familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field
- Relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Works under general supervision
- Leading and directing the work of others
- Meeting the expectations of a wide degree of creativity and latitude
- Developing and formulating standards, procedures and conventions for database use
- Writing code for database access, modifications and constructions including stored procedures
- Performing a variety of complicated tasks
