ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER (all levels): Plans or assists with planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of structures and facilities, such as roads, railroads, airports, bridges, harbors, channels, dams, irrigation projects, pipelines, power-plants, water and sewage systems and waste disposal units to solve environmental problems. Conducts research to identify and abate or eliminate sources of pollutants. Analyzes and reports measurements and observations of air, water, soil and other sources to make recommendations on how best to clean and preserve the environment. Designs and engineers abatement operations, waste disposal sites and reclamation of contaminated land and water. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision and guidance. BS/BA degree (or equivalent) plus 0-2 years of experience in related field. Higher-level environmental engineer positions may require as many as 10 years prior experience.
Additional requirements for higher-level Environmental Engineer positions may include:
- Increased familiarity with standard concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field
- Relying on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals
- Working under general supervision
- Meeting the expectations of a wide degree of creativity and latitude
- Leading and directing the work of others
- Performing a variety of complicated tasks
