Environmental Scientist, position no. nws-es012

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST (all levels): Conducts or assists to conduct research to identify and abate or eliminate sources of pollutants that affect people, wildlife and their environments. Analyzes and reports measurements and observations of air, water, soil and other sources to make recommendations on how best to clean and preserve the environment. Designs and monitors waste disposal sites, preserves water supplies, and reclaims contaminated land and water. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision and guidance. BS/BA degree (or equivalent) plus 0-2 years of experience in related field. Higher-level environmental scientist positions may require as many as 6+ years prior experience.

Additional requirements for higher-level Environmental Scientist positions may include:

• Increased familiarity with standard concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field
• Relying on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals
• Working under general supervision
• Meeting the expectations of a wide degree of creativity and latitude
• Leading and directing the work of others
• Performing a variety of complicated tasks
