Geographic/Geospatial Specialist, position no. nws-ggs014

GEOGRAPHIC/GEOSPATIAL SPECIALIST (all levels): Utilizes Geographic Information System techniques to provide a better understanding of certain variables in a given geographic location. Extracts data from GIS software and uses varying analysis methods to arrive at results. Recommends appropriate reactionary strategies in response to GIS analysis. Provides maps and data sets to clients to supplement analysis. Knowledgeable of GIS software and technology. Works in conjunction with CAD drafters and technicians. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. BS/BA degree (or equivalent) and 0-2 years of experience in related area. Higher-level geographic/geospatial specialists may be required to have as many as 10 years prior experience.

Additional requirements for higher-level Geographic/Geospatial Specialist positions may include:

• Increased familiarity with standard concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field
• Relying on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals
• Working under general supervision
• Meeting the expectations of a wide degree of creativity and latitude
• Leading and directing the work of others
