NETWORK ENGINEER (all levels): Provides technical support in the installation and maintenance of employer's or customer's Local Area Network (LAN). Evaluates or assists in the evaluation of hardware and software, including peripheral, output and telecommunications equipment. Installs network hardware and software, including network operating systems. Monitors data communications to ensure that network is available to all users. Troubleshoots and resolves routine problems. Generally responsible for maintaining a simple network of 25 or fewer nodes, or for a section of a larger network. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision and guidance. BS/BA degree (or equivalent) plus 0-2 years of experience in related field. Higher-level network engineer positions may require as many as 10 years prior experience.
Additional requirements for higher-level Network Engineer positions may include:
- Installing, maintaining and coordinating the use of employers or customer's Local Area or Wide Area Network (LANWAN)
- Enforcing security procedures
- Responsibility for higher number of nodes
- Certification as a network engineer
- Greater familiarity of commonly-used concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field
- Working under general supervision
- Maintaining fault-tolerant systems and managing systems backups
- Meeting the expectations of a wide degree of creativity and latitude
- Testing and implementing interface programs
- Relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
- Extensive expertise across hardware and systems supplies by multiple vendors
- Installing and maintaining complex networks that typically link numerous computing platforms, operating systems and network topologies across widely dispersed geographic areas
- Evaluating hardware and software suitable for large, complex networks
- Leading and directing the work of others.
