Software Engineer, position no. nws-se026

SOFTWARE ENGINEER (all levels): Designs or assists in design and coding of software product components, units, and modules according to detailed specifications. Participates in analysis and development of test plans. Tests assigned components and units. Provides test results and recommends corrections to senior developers. Requires practical knowledge of one or more platforms and operating systems, and of programming languages. Typically requires knowledge of one or more systems architectures. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision and guidance. BS/BA degree (or equivalent) plus 0-2 years of experience in related field. Higher-level software engineer positions may require as many as 10 years prior experience.

Additional requirements for higher-level Software Engineer positions may include:

• Preparing comprehensive test plans
• Recommending more complex corrections to senior developers
• Extensive knowledge of one or more platforms and operating systems, and of programming languages
• Increased familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field
• Relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
• Working under general supervision
• Meeting the expectations of a wide degree of creativity and latitude
• Performing a variety of complicated tasks
• Acting as a technical resource or providing leadership for lower-level developers
• Providing product demonstrations and participating in trade shows and seminars
• Interacting with customers, vendors and external development partners
• Overseeing technical design, development, and implementation of large projects and/or major software products and systems
• Acting as team leader in prioritizing group tasks, determining individual assignments, and reviewing work of lower-level developers.
