SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT (all levels): Applies knowledge in a technical field with proficiency in relevant engineering principles and practices. Implements solutions to difficult problems. Generates concepts as evidenced by product or process improvement. Uses engineering and scientific tools to integrate requirements and solve technical problems. Utilizes tools, techniques, processes and facilities such as state-of-the-art simulation environments, laboratories and test facilities. Participates in engineering team activities in a specialized engineering or technology subject area. Contributes to the technical planning process and provides technical guidance with 1-2 years of specialized experience. Higher-level subject matter expert positions may require as many as 15+ years experience.

  • Recognition for technical knowledge and judgment in a technical field
  • Leading engineering team activities in a specialized engineering or technology subject area
  • Developing solutions to difficult problems
  • Recognition at the industry level in a technical field or highly specialized engineering or technology area
  • Application of experience, skills and expert knowledge within a highly specialized engineering sub discipline to broad, complex assignments
  • Generating revolutionary concepts as evidenced by synthesis of new products or processes
  • Recognition at the industry level as a key contributor to the technical planning process and for providing technical management and guidance
  • Recognition by industry and federal government agency in a technical or management field, or highly specialized engineering, technology or management area, and is proficient in relevant engineering management principles and practices
  • Creating or using powerful tools to develop solutions for technical engineering or scientific problems
  • Utilization and development of tools, techniques, processes and facilities such as state-of-the-art simulation environments, laboratories and test facilities
  • Applying experience, skills and expert knowledge within a highly specialized engineering sub discipline to broad, complex assignments.
