Technician, position no. nws-t029

TECHNICIAN (all levels): Assists engineers/scientists in project efforts. Operates, constructs, maintains, and/or tests electrical/mechanical systems and components. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Typically works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. HS diploma (or equivalent) and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Higher-level technician positions may require as many as 6+ years prior experience.

Additional requirements for higher-level Technician positions may include:

• Increased familiarity with standard concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field
• Relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
• Meeting the expectations of a wide degree of creativity and latitude
• Performing a variety of complicated tasks
• Leading and directing the work of others
